Police offer B1m reward for capture of city bombers
Police have offered a one-million-baht reward for information leading to the arrest of the culprits in the Bangkok and Nonthaburi New Year bombings.
The offer came as police yesterday released to the press surveillance camera footage containing images of a man believed to have been involved in the blast in the Saphan Khwai area of the capital on New Year's Eve.
Deputy national police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwan announced the reward after meeting with senior police officers yesterday.
Pol Gen Patcharawat leads the team investigating the nine bombings in Bangkok and Nonthaburi provinces on the night of Dec 31 which killed three and injured scores.
Acting national police chief Seripisuth Temiyavej has listed the case as top priority and instructed subordinates to take swift action.
However, the release of the footage was said to have upset assistant national police chief Jongrak Juthanont, who previously said it was secret and if it was leaked it may affect the police investigation.
The footage, obtained from a surveillance camera in front of a gold shop, shows a man wearing a blue T-shirt and a white cap leaving a plastic bag _ believed to contain a bomb _ at a plant pot near a police booth at the Saphan Khwai intersection. The footage was recorded at 4.53 pm, nearly one hour before the bomb went off.
"Apart from the man, there were no other people dropping things off there during the one-hour interval," Pol Gen Patcharawat said.
The footage was the key piece of evidence in the case so far, he said. Police used the footage to seek an arrest warrant for the man from the Criminal Court, which granted it last Friday.
Earlier, a composite image of another suspect who was seen in footage taken at the Seacon Square shopping mall, another of the nine bomb sites, was released to the media.
The man resembled Ramkhamhaeng University dropout Thawalsak Paenae, who was linked to a bomb blast in the restive South last year.
