Songkran vs. muslimer
Christian
Hej.

Powerful bomb defused in southern Thai trade centre
Fri Apr 8, 2005 05:19 AM ET

By Nopporn Wong-Anan

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thai police have defused a bomb in the southern
commercial centre of Hat Yai, where suspected Muslim militants struck
at the weekend in a rare attack outside their usual territory,
security officials said on Friday.

The remote-controlled 3 kg (6.6 lbs) device -- like Sunday's bombs
made of gunpowder and fertiliser -- was defused on Wednesday, a senior
policeman said.

"The bomb was connected to a mobile phone and meant to cause damage,
not take lives, otherwise it would have contained a lot of nails," the
officer told Reuters.

He declined to say where the bomb was found, but Thai newspapers said
it was in a rubbish container next to a leading department store and
failed to explode because it was not wired properly.

The store manager said the bomb was found by a garbage collector at a
dump site.

"The truck where the bomb was found takes rubbish from our store, the
train station and rows of shops, so we don't know for sure where the
bomb was planted," he told Reuters.

"It was not found in front of our store as reported."

Police in Hat Yai, whose bars and brothels are popular among Malaysian
men, denied any bomb had been found since Sunday's explosions which
killed two people and wounded more than 60.

The Sunday blasts were the latest deadly attacks in a region where
more than 600 people have died in 15 months of violence the government
blames on Muslim separatists.

Security officials blamed Islamic militants for them and said they
expected more attacks in the area, which lies just north of the three
southernmost provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala which have seen
the worst of the violence.

The government has urged people in Bangkok to be on alert for signs of
militant attacks and tightened security around western embassies,
shopping malls and train and bus terminals.

"We've asked department stores to help us watch out for suspicious
objects and people and we will send our officers to help train their
security guards," Bangkok Metropolitan police spokesman Chatchawal
Suksomjit said.

Buddhist Thailand's predominantly Muslim far south has a century long
history of often violent separatism, which security analysts fear
might attract backing from international Islamic militant networks,
such as Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda group.
