Major Internet broadband players have started a price war to attract new customers, hoping that the number of high-speed Internet subscribers will reach 2.8 million.

Chief Executive Officer of the Jasmine Group, Pete Bodharamik.

The Internet gateway providers also forecast that the cost of Internet access will continue to fall to international levels by the middle of next year.

A source at TOT Corporation said in order to respond to the broadband services being offered by its competitors, the company offer special deals to exiting customers of its 2Mbps/590 baht package to upgrade to 3Mbps for the same price, especially in upcountry areas.

"We're not offering it (the 3Mbps package) to every customer because in some areas the quality of the line cannot support the speed, but we will offer free calls for 300 baht fixed line phone subscribers to reach the company target to add 300,000 new customers this year," the source said.

All this competition will accelerate the uptake of broadband and add an estimated one million users this year, which combined with last year's total of 1.8 million will bring Thailand closer to Ovum Research's forecast for Thailand in 2011, which was three million broadband users.

Last month, the CEO of the Jasmine Group, Pete Bodharamik, announced the MaxNet high-speed Internet service, 3Mbps for 590 baht per month, compared with last year's price of 750 baht per month.

These services focus on "Generation C", or the Content Generation, who love online and wireless technology. Recently, TrueOnline for True Corporation MD Vichaow Rakphongphairoj announced an 8Mbps broadband package for the fist time in Thailand for a cost of 1,990 baht per month, or as little as 1,199 per month if you subscribe to TrueMove or TrueVisions services.

This new service may satisfy high-end consumers looking for high-definition online entertainment, video clips, slide widgets for blogs, streaming live broadcasts, online games or other high-bandwidth content.

Additionally, it is also offering a new 3Mbps "local package" for 450 baht per month, hoping to attracts customers who mainly visit local web sites with (at 3Mbps) but with international access speeds of only 128Kbps. The company expects to reach 700,000 subscribers by end of this year.

This year there is still fierce competition between Internet service providers, with more than 100 companies tries to compete in the market, with video and Voice over IP being the key drivers helping to consume more bandwidth, according to the general manager of True Internet Gateway, Anothai Ratanakul.

Recently, six Internet gateway providers linked their networks for domestic Internet access, which will help to reduce prices by more than 10%.

Over the past two to three years, after the NTC liberalised the Internet gateway business, Internet access costs have fallen from 30,000 baht per megabit per month to 7,000 baht per megabit per month, but this is still higher than Singapore, that charges 3,000 baht per megabit.

"I believe that the price war between Internet gateway providers will slow down this year and focus more on service quality, because the price has fallen a lot in the past few years. It will continue to decrease, but more slowly, and I expect by end of this year to mid-next year, the average price in Thailand will be the same as international rates," Anothai explained.

He expects that demand for Internet bandwidth will grow, especially in a global recession because corporate users demand to communicate via Internet technology to reduce travel costs.

To take advantage of this opportunity, the company is ready to offer a new International Private Link Circuits (IPLC) service to corporate users under a trial license from the National Telecommunication Commission of Thailand (NTC).

This new service will help corporate users bring down Internet costs, especially multinational companies who need a dedicated line to connect with offices in other countries.

Moreover, international global carriers such as NTT and Verizon are potential customers who may buy the service in order to offer integration services to their global customers who set up business in Thailand.

Currently, after NTC issued trial licenses, there are three or four IPLC providers and it has helped to reduce costs by 30 to 40%, compare to the past when there were only two providers.

He continued that bring down the cost of Internet access will encourage more global Internet player such as Google, Yahoo! to set up data centres in Thailand, but there are several other key factors such as electricity costs and the number of point-of-presences (POP) as well as special privilege from Board of Investment.

It is forecasted that Thailand's international Internet bandwidth will jump 100% from 30Gbps in 2008 to 60Gbps this year. True Internet Gateway's share will be more than 10Gbps by the end of 2010 and may reach 30Gbps in the next three to four years.
