Muay Thai Fighter Mr. Adam William Menagh, 22, was killed in a head on motorcycle wreck on Phuket Island Thailand 0530 AM, Monday, February 22, 2010. A Thai national Mr. Chainarong Wathana, 24, was also killed. An unnamed Danish National was seriously injured and taken to hospital, current condition unknown. Adam Menagh was training at Suwit Gym in Chalong and was set to fight in Patong later this week. As news comes out on this I will try to update the story. It seems to me I know of a dozen or more Muay Thai fighters who have died on motorcycles in Thailand. One very small camp in Isaan lost two of their best fighters to motorcycle crashes in a period of less than three months. Personally I have driven bikes all over Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand without much more than a scratch till I hit a dog three years ago then lost a couple years of my life to rehab. If I told any fighter or tourist anything it would be "Dont ride bikes in Thailand" as its the single most dangerous thing any tourist or Thai can do. A couple guys who died are burned into my memory, one was a tourist from my hotel who I had to help his drunk brother locate his body at the morgue. It was a hot and beautiful tropical day and the morgue was just a roof with a refrigeration unit there under the coconut trees. A rush of cool air that reeked of death came out of the door as it opened, the drawer rolled out, the brother broke down, it was horrible. The other guy was only in Thailand less than 24 hours and tried to do a u-turn as my friends had a children's party one sunny day on Koh Chang Island, the impact sounded like a bomb and two people were killed layng mangled in front of the entire party including more than twenty kids. The point here is many of you guys and some girls are heading this way to Thailand, please be careful and if you can, avoid motorcycles. This is yet another avoidable tragedy this kid never saw coming, maybe posting this here will help somebody stay safe. "The Public Health office has just released figures showing Phuket had 13 fatalities on the island's roads in January, with 1233 people left injured."
