Army fears infra-red bomb devices

Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Vanasatidya yesterday warned of a new technique to remotely detonate bombs through the use of infrared technology by insurgents in the restive South.

Chidchai said officials are studying the possibility of using infrared devices to detonate explosions after authorities found out that bomb-makers behind the explosions in the deep South were experimenting with the new technique. This new technology emerged on the scene after the government curbed the use of handsets by ordering all prepaid SIM card users to register their names with their respective phone operators.

Chidchai said the new technique has not been incorporated in the attacks in the region but he fears that such a tactic is inevitable. Since the curb on mobile phones two weeks ago, insurgents have returned to the use of electrical wires to set off explosions.

Earlier, authorities warned local residents not to return missed call unless the number is familiar because it could be a trick by insurgents to lure innocent people into setting off a bomb.
