Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife, Pojaman - AP BANGKOK: The wife of Thailand's deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra will seek 1.4 billion dollars in compensation from military-backed authorities that have frozen her assets, a lawyer said on Thursday. Pojaman Shinawatra will file the suit in civil court on Friday to demand that the military's Assets Examination Committee (AEC) release 2.5 billion baht (73.9 million dollars) of her money that was frozen as part of investigations into alleged corruption by her husband, the lawyer said. She will also seek 47.5 billion baht (1.4 billion dollars) in damages arising from lost business opportunities due to the freeze, lawyer Noppadon Pattama told reporters. Pojaman's frozen money is part of 1.5 billion dollars in assets belonging to Thaksin and his family that has been blocked by the committee. "The asset freeze is a double standard, which only targets the Shinawatra family, not Thaksin's cabinet members" who are under investigation on similar charges, Noppadon told reporters. Pojaman has been charged with tax evasion over a 1997 stock sale. She has been charged along with Thaksin over a controversial real estate deal now before the Supreme Court, in which Thaksin is accused of using his influence as prime minister to get a government agency to sell her land at a bargain price. The couple has also been summoned to hear fraud charges over the 2003 listing of a property company owned by his family. She and Thaksin deny any wrongdoing. Noppadon says the couple will not return to Thailand to face any of the cases because they fear they will not receive a fair trial under the military-backed government. Thaksin has been living abroad, mostly in London, since the military overthrew his government in a bloodless coup in September 2006. His wife has also been overseas for the last two months. |
