11 dead as accidents mar Loy Krathong

(Bangkok Post) - Eleven people were killed and many were injured during Loy Krathong as the festival was marred by accidents with firecrackers, brawls and road deaths.

Most incidents took place late Saturday night and early Sunday morning when the festival was celebrated nationwide.

In Phitsanulok seven villagers, including two elderly people and a four-year-old girl, were hit by a truck on the Phitsanulok-Noen Maprang road while riding a motorcycle with a sidecar to a Loy Krathong festival in Noen Maprang district, police said.

The speeding truck slammed into the rear of the motorcycle, throwing off one woman who was dragged under the truck, witnesses said.

The victim's krathongs were found scattered around the scene.

In Surin's Muang district, three young girls were killed in a road accident near an irrigation canal, police said.

The three were hit by a pick-up truck while riding a motorbike home from a Loy Krathong festival. Their motorbike went into the canal and the three were killed on the spot, police said.

The truck driver fled the scene.

In Ratchaburi, a violent brawl among teenagers caused one death.

According to police, a man identified as Srithai Boontong, 20, took his girlfriend to a Loy Krathong festival in Ban Pong district. He met his girlfriend's former lover, they quarrelled and Srithai was gunned down. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Injuries from firecrackers continued yesterday, even though police warned people not to use them.

In Tak's Mae Sot district, a nine-year-old Burmese boy, identified as Soe Aung, was injured after he took home a firecracker left abandoned on a street.

The firecracker later exploded and injured his face, fingers and legs.

The boy was rushed to hospital and was in stable condition.

In Pattaya, two foreign tourists were also injured by firecrackers. Their injuries were minor, according to police.

The German wife of one of the victims said her husband was injured while they were walking along a beach. Firecrackers were thrown at them by a group of teenagers, who fled after the blast.

The government has tried in vain to crack down on the use of firecrackers during Loy Krathong, a ceremony in which people pay their respects to the river goddess

Det er jo tragisk, at mennesker skal dø fordi at man afholder en højtidlighed, men jeg tror nu ikke dødstallet er så meget større end en normal lørdagaften i ThailandSadSad
IT IS NICE TO BE IMPORTANT, BUT MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!!
