Bird flu emerges in Nakhon Sawan

(BangkokPost.com) – The H5N1 bird flu virus has been detected in Nakhon Sawan province, according to Department of Livestock official Somboon Srisuthep - the first time in 10 months the disease has hit in Thailand.

Authorities suspected the presence of the H5N1 virus at a farm in Nakhon Sawan’s Chumsaeng district after thousands of chickens were found dead. A lab test conducted in Phitsanulok confirmed the chickens had died of the avian flu.

Officials have now ordered a quarantine of all avian livestock and requested the blanket disinfection of all poultry farms in the area within a five-kilometre radius of the infected farm.

The Nakhon Sawan Department of Livestock has already issued a warning to poultry farmers and prohibited the movement of live poultry nationwide. Consumers were also warned to eat only properly cooked chicken meat.
