Bizarre Protest in Sriracha concerning the use of unlicensed music in bars.
A bizarre story now from Bowin Police Station near Sriracha District, 30kms from Pattaya. On Thursday afternoon, a group of local Karaoke Bar owners organized a protest outside the station to show their anger at record companies conducting raids of their establishments. Even though the record companies are working within the law and target establishments that are unlicensed, the protesters claim this should stop as they may be forced out of business, even though they are effectively breaking the law by operating their bars with no music copyright licenses. Police Lieutenant Colonel Gitipit came and met with the protesters and amazingly agreed with the protesters that the record companies were not being fair and should at least consult with the Police before they raid any bars. Normally these establishments can receive fines of between 5,000 and 30,000 Baht and their computers and copied Karaoke VCD’s are confiscated. We suggest to the protesters that it may be a good idea to purchase the correct music licenses and then they can run their businesses without fear of paying fines or having equipment confiscated.
