True unit looks to revive interest in PCT
Asia Wireless Communication Co (AWC) is introducing a new promotion that bundles its personal communications telephone (PCT) services with True Move mobile phones at 299 baht a month for unlimited calls to all telephone networks.

AWC said its promotion would require customers to sign a 12-month contract and purchase a dual-mode handset that works on PCT and GSM mobile systems. The rate of 299 baht per month _ reduced from 428 baht under an earlier plan _ allows unlimited calls to both fixed-line and mobile phones.

Subscribers with postpaid plans will have the monthly fee waived for six months and prepaid customers will get three months free.

Almost all PCT customers, 40% of whom are pre-teens, are in Bangkok.

Suthon Apinuntavach, the acting co-general manager of AWC, said the promotion was expected to attract 20,000 new subscribers this year.

He said the company expected to maintain its subscriber base at 400,000 with average revenue per user of 210 baht per month this year, and total revenue of 800 million baht, down from 700 million last year.

''We expect to reach the break-even point in 2010 if our subscriber base stands at 400,000 over the next two years,'' said Mr Suthon.

Mr Suthon said the company also aimed to upgrade its PCT network to provide WiFi and WiMax services once the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issues the licences.

In another development, True Corp yesterday reported a better-than-expected 562% rise in its first-quarter net profit, helped by large foreign-exchange gains.

True said it earned 2.74 billion baht, or 0.67 baht per share, compared with 414 million baht a year earlier.

True has said it expected 2008 revenues to rise 8% from 61.6 billion baht last year, led by the mobile unit True Move.

Quarterly net profit was driven up by a 2.46-billion-baht forex gain, up from 1.24 billion a year earlier, True said.

True Move, whose service revenues account for half of True Corp's revenue, said it gained 368,190 net new subscribers in the quarter and now had 12.5 million customers.

True shares closed yesterday on the SET at 5.10 baht, up 20 satang, in trade worth 330.45 million baht.
