Five-year insurgency quelling costs Thailand Bt109 billion: research
Thailand has paid an extremely high financial toll, totalling Bt109 billion over a five-year period, to quell violence in the south, according to a latest research by Deep South Watch.

For example, Assistant professor Srisomphob Jitrphiromsri of the Deep South Watch said that it costs the Thai taxpayers Bt88 million to put down just one violent incident late last year.

Based on records covering conflicts from 2004-2008, which averaged 1,956 incidents annually, the combined budget of Bt109 billion was spent in those years to fight insurgency.

Overall, these conflicts have already killed a total of 3,287 persons (Muslims 1,788; Buddhists 1,348), injured 5,405 persons (3,224 Buddhists, and 1,633 Muslims, and 548 unspecified persons).

For 2008, there were 718 incidents, over 50 per cent down from the 1,861 conflicts in 2007.
