This November, Habitat for Humanity will join forces with the U.S. Embassy and a host of community volunteers to build 82 homes for Thai families in need in honor of his Majesty the King’s 82nd birthday. The homes, to be built in Chiang Mai, are a centerpiece of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project Mekong Build 2009. On Tuesday, March 31, Ambassador and Mrs. John welcomed representatives from Habitat for Humanity and a host of honored guests to their residence to publicize the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project Mekong Build 2009. Following remarks by Ambassador John and Dr. Chainarong Monthienvichienchai, a member of Habitat’s international board of directors, the John’s daughter, Nicole, shared a moving account of her own personal experience on a Habitat for Humanity build that she recently volunteered for here in Thailand. Every year since 1984, former U.S. president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn have donated one week of their time – and their building skills – to Habitat. The Carters will join thousands of volunteers in building houses and bringing attention to the need for decent and affordable housing to countries along the Mekong River. The event will also launch a five-year Habitat for Humanity campaign to assist families across this part of Southeast Asia. The site in Muang Lane sub-district of Chiang Mai will be the main location for the 2009 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project. The week-long 2009 building project, which runs from 15th-20th November, will secure homes in partnership with more than 200 families, and will initiate projects to provide tens of thousands of more homes.
